Cupping therapy

Cupping is an ancient healing therapy used to ease pain. A therapist places special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create a vacuum suction

Cupping is a form of traditional Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine. People have practiced cupping therapy for thousands of years.

Suction from the cups draws fluid into the treated area. This suction force expands and breaks open tiny blood vessels (capillaries) under the skin. Your body treats the cupping area like an injury. It sends more blood to the area to stimulate the natural healing process, the cupping clears the pores and releases toxins.

People mostly get cupping to relieve conditions that cause pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation, and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.

People mostly use cupping to relieve conditions that cause pain. Some people say it also helps with chronic (ongoing) health issues. Cupping may ease symptoms of:

  • Arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Back pain, neck pain, knee pain and shoulder pain.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Headaches and migraines

Cupping uses a cup to pull an area of skin into a suction that decompresses muscles and connective tissue. This promotes blood flow to the compromised area, enhances circulation and helps to increase the body’s own healing processes

The cups are in place for around 20 minutes, you will feel a slight pinching feeling at first when they are first placed onto the skin.  Once they are removed you will notice some markings around the treated area.  These are called stagnation markings, they look like Bruises and may be pink, red, or sometimes purple or dark brown. Bruising typically goes away within two weeks. These markings do not hurt, and you will not notice they are there, you may also notice changes on the surface of the skin. It’s important to take care of yourself after a treatment. Stay warm, cover up, drink plenty of water and follow your aftercare, you should also avoid swimming or showering within three hours of a cupping session

Cups are most often applied to the:

  • back
  • chest
  • abdomen
  • buttocks
  • legs
  • Drink a lot of water.
Water helps flush your lymphatic system of the cellular waste that cupping helps release from your tissues.
  • Stay warm.
Try to cover the area(s) where you received cupping.
  • You may feel more tired than normal or experience flu-like symptoms after cupping (headache or general body aches). This is a temporary reaction by your immune system to the cellular waste that cupping helps release.

For 4-6 hours post cupping, avoid exposure to:

  • Caffeine, alcohol, sugary foods and drinks, dairy, and processed meats
These foods slow down your body’s ability to process the treatment.
  • Hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, and strong air conditioning
After cupping, your skin will be more sensitive to temperature in the areas where the cups were placed. Give your skin time to recover. If possible, shower with filtered water to avoid reintroducing unnecessary chemicals onto your skin.
  • Intense exercise
  • Cold and windy conditions.
